This piece is part of an ongoing project to redesign the masthead of the Longmont Times-Call’s sister paper in Cañon City, Colorado. I started by creating an illustration of Cañon City’s Royal Gorge Bridge—the highest suspension bridge in the world—to incorporate in the new masthead. The clean lines and strong serifs of the typeface, Joanna, reflect the bridge’s minimal, yet sturdy, architecture. The colors for the masthead can be found in the city’s most significant geographic feature, the Royal Gorge.
